Adding to our RI stories series, our third group shared how they visited the Duddhi Block of Sonbhadra and met villagers who were displaced due to the construction of Kanhar Dam People from a total of 170 villages were displaced and here is a small sharing from one of the villagers We had to leave our Village and land behind because of the Kanhar Dam, with us there were hundreds of other villages who lost everything The government gave us only a small 10x15-foot plot and ₹7.11 lakh, but how will that ever replace the 25 bighas of fertile land we left behind? Sonbhadra is the energy hub of India but still, we’re living here without electricity , without water, and without health facilities—the nearest health center is 25 km away in Duddhi The government has left us on the roadside like this, with no means of livelihood There’s no farming, no industries where we could work as labourers This experience was truly eye opening for all of us This is one of the first experiences where the group met people who were directly affected by concrete development and struggled to make ends meet due to their prolonged displacement and lack of opportunities
