It has now expanded into the digital domain. In response to a question raised in Parliament by Rajya Sabha MP and BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh, the Union Government has revealed that organized drug trafficking syndicates operating in Punjab are increasingly relying on advanced digital technologies to run their operations. Reacting to the Parliamentary reply, Tarun Chugh said Punjab's drug mafia has rapidly transformed into a digitally enabled criminal network, while the Bhagwant Mann Government continues to function with outdated systems and inadequate technological preparedness. Chugh said that when traffickers are using encrypted communication platforms, darknet networks and cryptocurrencies, Punjab's digital surveillance and enforcement infrastructure does not appear sufficiently modern to tackle such sophisticated threats. He said the information provided by the Union Government in Parliament is clear evidence that the nature of drug trafficking in Punjab is changing rapidly. Drug traffickers are now using digital platforms for communication, recruitment, payments, location sharing and coordination of drug consignments. They are also relying on cryptocurrencies, virtual digital assets, VPNs, virtual numbers and forged KYC-based SIM cards to conceal their identities and financial transactions. "The drug mafia has modernized itself, but Punjab Government's digital infrastructure still appears outdated. When criminals are using encrypted platforms, darknet networks and cryptocurrencies, the government's response must also be technology-driven, modern and intelligence-led," Chugh said. Minister of State for Home Affairs Shri Nityanand Rai informed Parliament that investigations conducted by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) have revealed increasing use of digital platforms by organized drug trafficking syndicates operating in Punjab. He further stated that instances have also been detected where incarcerated traffickers continued coordinating drug trafficking activities through mobile phones and associates operating outside prisons. The Minister also informed Parliament that traffickers are increasingly using GPS-enabled drones, encrypted communication systems and other advanced digital technologies to facilitate their operations. To counter these challenges, the Government has strengthened the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) mechanism, enhanced intelligence-sharing among agencies and established Joint Coordination Committees to monitor major drug trafficking and narco-terror cases. The Narcotics Control Bureau has also established Zonal and Regional Offices in Amritsar to improve operational coordination in Punjab's border districts. The Government has additionally engaged cyber experts to strengthen investigations into darknet-enabled drug trafficking, cryptocurrency transactions and other technology-driven criminal activities. Chugh said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India is pursuing a policy of zero tolerance against drugs and narco-terrorism and is continuously strengthening institutional, technological and enforcement capabilities to dismantle organized drug trafficking networks. He said that if Punjab is to be freed from the scourge of drugs, the Mann Government must complement ground-level enforcement with advanced cyber surveillance, artificial intelligence-driven analytics, digital tracking systems and real-time intelligence coordination with central agencies.
