Apart from being the first citizen of India, a president is also the head commander of all forces (army, navy, and airforce). The very first president of India, Dr, Rajendra Prasad was elected by an electoral college comprising both Houses of Parliament and the legislative assemblies of each state. He started just after the Constitution came into action on January 26, 1950. 

The tenure of a president is generally 5 years. But the first president had served the country for 12 years in a row and then succeeded Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. There are some presidents who were there for a short period and due to some reasons, they had to leave the place.
