Women's Reservation Bill and Its Impact on India's Political Landscape
Central government introduced a Women's Reservation Bill in a special session of Parliament. Now people are talking about women reservation continuously. But what is a Women's Reservation Bill?
The Women's Reservation Bill was also introduced in 1996. However couldnt passed. The bill proposed 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies. Also, provision for sub-reservation was made for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. After that this bill again introduced during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government in 1998. The Vajpayee government was running with the support of many parties, consequently facing opposition regarding this bill. The Vajpayee government did not give up just then, and the government tried to get it passed in 1999, 2002 and 2003-2004 year, though unfortunately it was not successful.
After Bjp lost the power in the central government, Congress came to power in 2004. In consequence, Dr Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister. During the congress government era, the Women's Reservation Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha as 108th Constitutional Amendment Bill. Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal were opposing the bill. To the contrary, the congress government did not introduce this bill in the Lok Sabha. This bill automatically lapsed after the dissolution of the Lok Sabha in 2014. While Rajya Sabha is a permanent house, therefore further discussion is going on.
Lok Sabha approves this bill. Now, this bill will become a law after the approval of the President. As a result, women will get 33 percent reservation in the 2024 elections. With this, every third member of the Lok Sabha will be a woman.
