eka-bilvaṁ śivārpaṇam - I was honoured to have the opportunity to participate in a puja for Lord Shiva today at the extraordinary Sawantwadi Palace in Maharashtra thesawantwadipalace I’ll be sharing from here soon…including the incredible creations of platedwithroyalty and lakhambhonsle The Shiva Bilvashtakam, composed by Adi Shankaracharya, is a revered hymn that glorifies the spiritual significance of offering bilva leaves to Lord Shiva The chant highlights how these trifoliate leaves, presented in clusters of three, symbolize Lord Shiva and are deeply associated with his divine essence Lord Shiva is believed to be especially fond of bilva patra (bilva leaves from the Ber/Bael/Bilva tree - Aegle marmelos - also known as Wood Apple tree), and offering them to the Shivalinga with devotion and a pure heart is said to fulfill the devotee’s desires Adi Shankaracharya revived Sanatana Dharma and is believed to have established the Dashanami Sannyasa tradition, dividing ascetics into ten lineages (Dashanami) to preserve Vedic teachings and spiritual practices To protect Hinduism against invasions and ensure discipline among ascetics, he also formed Akharas (martial orders)—groups of warrior-monks who combined asceticism with martial training These akharas, such as Juna, Niranjani, Mahanirvani, and Agni, are central to the Kumbh Mela, where they lead the Shahi Snan (royal bath) and pass on spiritual teachings Over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned in the lead up to Makar Sankranti when I shall reach Prayagraj itself Are you coming to Prayagraj?
