- Today is the death anniversary of Billy Arjan Singh. Billy died at Jasbirnagar Farm in Palia, and was cremated and had his ashes scattered in Dudhwa, at Tiger Haven, his home where he reared 3 leopards, a tigress and a fishing cat, and rehabilitated them into the jungle. Billy had great foresight. He could see that the magnificent Sal forests of the Terai were disappearing before his eyes, as were the wonderful and varied wildlife which inhabited them. These forests were home to Tigers, Elephants, Sloth Bears, Leopards, Hog deer, Sambhar, Cheetal, Swamp Deer, Barking Deer, Badgers, Jackals, Wild Boar, Rusty Spotted Cats, Fishing Cats, Leopard Cats, Crocodiles, Snakes, one-horned rhinos, many different birds, fish, insects, plus varied plants….. a veritable treasure house of a forest. Thanks to his tireless efforts and with the support of Mrs Indira Gandhi the erstwhile reserve forest was declared a National Park, and the Dudhwa National Park came into being. Billy was a Pioneer and a Visionary and his battle to conserve these magnificent forests has been successful and appreciated by the ever-increasing numbers of visitors to Dudhwa, Kishanpur, Katarniya Ghat where there are dolphins, Pilibhit….. Billy authored several books on Wildlife, which had gone out of print. With the help and expertise of Natraj Publishers, his family and friends, three of his books have been republished, along with new forewords. His message is even more relevant today than when he wrote these books as, all of us who watch our deteriorating environment and our dwindling forests and wildlife with dismay and despair, can see.1
