Joined the Indian National Congress in 1969. He has won elections for a record 11 consecutive times having won the assembly elections for an unprecedented 9 times (1972, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008) and the parliamentary elections from Gulbarga during 2009 and 2014. His commitment to social justice, upliftment of the weaker sections, uncompromising approach towards development and providing basic facilities in all villages have ensured his continued success in electoral politics.
