In School he was an outstanding sportsperson and was declared `Best Man` in practically all the Divisions. He made sports records both in the field and track events
His early political career was aligned with the Indian National Congress and served as Joint Secretary in 1985 and as a General Secretary in 1987 Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee,. He was also member of All India Congress and President of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee on Human Rights. He resigned from Indian National Congress in 2014. He served as the President of Delhi Naga Students` Union from 1966-67 and became General Secretary of Naga Students` Federation for Games & Sports
During `his tenure as a member of Lok Sabha, he was in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications which later was renamed as Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Technology. In several tours, he was made the Convenor of Parliamentary Standing Committee
He was also a member of the “Offices of Profits" and the Committee on. "Absence of Members". He was a member of the Consultative Committee in the Ministry of Agriculture & in the Ministry of Food Processing
In the year 2000 he was appointed as the Whip of Congress Party in Lok Sabha (Lower House of the Parliament). He was designated a member of "Shadow Cabinet" of the Congress Parliamentary Party in 13th Lok Sabha
The fourth highest Civilian Honour, "Padma Shri" was awarded to him in 2009 by the Government of India for his contribution in Public Affairs
